Considering braces or clear aligners? It's a big decision that can transform your smile and confidence. However, it's important to be prepared for the journey ahead. Here are the 5 most important things our team at Dr Lachance Dental Clinic wants you to know before you start.

1. It is a long-term commitment

Orthodontic treatment isn't an overnight fix. Depending on the Complexeity of your case, you can expect to wear braces or aligners for anywhere from 12 to 24 months. During this time, you'll need to visit the clinic every 4 to 8 weeks for adjustments and progress checks. Consistency is key to getting the best results on time.

2. Hygiene is more important than ever

When you have braces, food gets trapped easily. You'll need to brush after every meal and spend extra time flossing to prevent cavities and gum inflammation. If you choose clear aligners (like Invisalign), you must remove them to eat and brush your teeth before putting them back in to avoid trapping bacteria.

"The success of your treatment depends as much on your home care as it does on our work in the clinic."

3. There will be an adjustment period

It is normal to feel some soreness after your braces are first put on or after an adjustment appointment. Your mouth needs time to get used to the pressure moving your teeth. We recommend sticking to soft foods (like soup, yogurt, and pasta) for the first few days and using orthodontic wax to prevent irritation.

4. You may need to adjust your diet

If you opt for traditional metal or ceramic braces, you'll need to avoid hard, sticky, and chewy foods that can break brackets or bend wires. Popcorn, nuts, gum, and hard candies are usually off-limits. With clear aligners, you don't have dietary restrictions, but you must remove your trays whenever you eat or drink anything other than water.

5. Retention is for life

The day your braces come off is exciting, but it’s not the end of the road. To keep your teeth straight, you will need to wear a retainer. Teeth have a natural tendency to shift back to their original positions. Wearing your retainer as prescribed—usually nightly forever—is the only way to guarantee your new smile lasts a lifetime.
